BREATH ing HEART and Talk with Johanna Keimeyer, on Sunday April 29th.

Thanks to all our amazing supporters who made it happen!

More info:
The documentary about the Art Installation BREATH ing HEART followed by an artist talk, shows the current work of the Berlin based artist Johanna Keimeyer which debuted at Art Basel June 2017. The documentary (production by David Kettner, Picsters) premiered at Spektrum, SoHo House Berlin and at Spring Studios NYC in 2017.

Keimeyer installed a giant heart with 10 meter diameter in a historical water filter in Basel. The vault was staged as the interior of the visitor’s own body. Artificial oversized lung alveoli, vein-like light installations and spatially wandering sounds of music, heartbeat and breath created a space where one could focus on one‘s inner being. Keimeyer invited the audience to enter the breathing heart, lie down and listen to their own breath and heartbeat. Even an evocative scent was developed for the heart.

“I would like to give people the experience to confront and feel themselves“, – the artist said.

“If it were possible to enter into an analogue heart, it could serve as a trigger for many people to finally go within themselves. Johanna Keimeyer already made this turnaround…“ – Porky, musician (Deichkind)

The heart in numbers: 75 cubic meters, 70 helpers, 250 kg plastic, 7 days set-up, 12 sponsors.

installation

INSTALLATION

BREATH ing HEART is an installation of a walk-in heart, in which up to 20 persons can lay and sit at the same time. This heart fills itself with air and pulses in a breathing rhythm accompanied by light, video, scent, and sound. All happening in the 1600 square meters/ (5250) square feet of the historical water filter building where the visitor perceives to be inside their body.

Happy to announce that Fredy Hadorn from Licht Feld Gallery will contribute the location Filter4. Kling Klang Klong will create the sound concept and composition and Studio Farbraum programms the LEDs. The artist started her crowdfunding-campaign and succeeded in winning Novartis as a major sponsor for the realization of the interactive heart object (diameter 10 meters/ 32 feet), as well as private supporters Robert Hankin and Ruth Stadler. Speakers of the British manufacturer Bowers & Wilkins ensure the implementation of the sound field and strongly support the project as well. Mezeaudio also joined, providing headsets. Open Innovation Space support the project with 3D printed parts and K.Schweizer with electrical engineering. KIRRON light components shine with establishing their innovative DycoLED light system. Emil Frey AG Autocenter Münchenstein provide the cars for the shuttle service. The renowned Berlin film production company Picsters document the project. Philippe Hoerle-Guggenheim, founder of HG Contemporary Gallery NYC, supports and presents the project.

In her new installation Ms. Keimeyer combines architecture, light, scent and music to create an immersive

interactive experience. After Art Basel the heart installation is planned to move on to other stations.

Filter4 offers an area of 1600 m² /5300 square feet with two chambers of 800 m² / 2650 square feet each. Johanna Keimeyer's art installation BREATH ing HEART was exhibited in June 2017 during Art Basel. Build by the architects Vischer & Fueter in the years 1903-1905 it used to be a slow filter plant, located in Bruderholz in Basel. A large part of Basel households were supplied with drinking water from here. In 2006, the plant was closed due to the City of Basel consuming less water.

The Artist

JOHANNA KEIMEYER

Johanna Keimeyer, installation artist, explains her work like this, “I want to give people this amazing live immersion that combines architecture, light, video, scent, sound and most important the viewer’s own inner universe. In the past I have missed the live component, and the emotional adventure where it is all about feeling what it is to be human. I strive to create living intimate connections, and my newest project is an installation that allows you to step inside your very own heart. I am creating this one of a kind experience with an integrated view of all the senses. It will be a very personal emotional and experiential journey that you can take home and relive again. I cannot ask often enough "What do you feel?", "Is there a feeling?"”

Keimeyer studied design and digital media at University of the Arts in Berlin (UdK), Tama Art University in Tokyo, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, USA, and Boston's MIT Media Lab, USA. Her previous work includes a series of lighting made from recycled materials, she now practices as multimedia artist transforming architectural highlights into emotional experiences with video, light, objects, scent and sound. Keimeyer has work in the art collections of Hugues and Marie Taittinger (Champagne Brand France), Petch Osathanugrah (O Museum Bangkok), Alexander von Vegesack (former Vitra Design Museum Director), Lucas Verweij (Design Author) and more.

Her current practice as an installation and multimedia artist is drawn from her experience working  for Vitra Design and collaborating with designers and artists from various backgrounds and expertise including: Ingo Maurer (lighting designer), Humberto and Fernando Campana (furniture designer Brazil), Bart Hess (designer), Felix Kubin (musician) Sven Helbig (composer), Sevil Peach (architect), Jonah Bokaer (choreographer), and others.
